David
Advent Devotion
"...the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David" Luke 3:31 (ESV).

David’s story is one of surprising grace, demonstrating how God chooses unlikely people to fulfill His purposes. When the prophet Samuel was sent to anoint Israel’s future king, he expected God’s chosen one to be among Jesse’s older, stronger sons. But God told Samuel, “The Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7, ESV). David, a shepherd and the youngest son, didn’t appear destined for greatness. Yet God saw a heart that trusted Him fully.
David’s life displayed qualities that pointed forward to Jesus. As a shepherd, David courageously watched over his father’s flock, even at personal risk and sacrifice. Similarly, Jesus came as the Good Shepherd, not only protecting His people but also laying down His life for them (John 10:11). David’s humble beginnings and unlikely rise to the throne prefigured Jesus, who, though born in a lowly manger, would become the King of Kings.
Despite David’s flaws, his devotion to God set him apart. He was a man after God’s own heart, constantly turning back to the Lord, even after failure. Jesus, however, fulfilled this role perfectly, embodying God’s heart without sin. Where David’s life and reign had limitations, Jesus came as the perfect and eternal King.
As we celebrate Christmas, we remember that God chose David not because of his strength but because of his heart. Jesus, born in humble circumstances, fulfills this promise completely. In Christ, we see a King who loves and understands us—a Savior who brings true peace. David’s life points us forward to Jesus, the ultimate Shepherd and King, who meets us where we are and leads us into the fullness of God’s grace and truth.
