Kenan(Cainen)
Advent Day 4
Luke 3:37
the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan
Kenan, the son of Enosh, is a descendant of Seth mentioned in Genesis 5:9-14. While not much is said about his life, his existence is still part of God’s unfolding plan of redemption. Kenan lived for 910 years—an extraordinary lifespan common to this early period of human history. This long life wasn’t unique to him, but rather a reflection of the world before the full effects of sin and death had taken hold.
When God created Adam, He made him with an eternal soul and a body designed for eternal life, meant to walk with God forever. But when sin entered the world through Adam and Eve’s disobedience, death began to spread throughout creation. The long lives of people like Kenan were a testament to the slow onset of death’s grip, but it was a reality none could escape. Over time, as sin continued to mar creation, human lifespans grew shorter.
Today, medical advancements have allowed many of us to live longer lives, but no matter how advanced our technology becomes, we cannot escape the ultimate reality of aging and death. This is the result of sin entering the world, and its effects are seen in Kenan’s life and death. Genesis 5:14 records, “Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.”
However, at Christmas, we celebrate the coming of the ultimate solution to this curse: Jesus Christ. God stepped into our world, born as a baby, to defeat sin and death. Through His death and resurrection, He offers us the promise of eternal life, free from the pain of aging and death.
One day, in the future, our story will no longer read, “and he died.” Instead, we will say with joy, “O death, where is your sting?” Thanks be to Christ, who has set us free from the grip of death.
